The announcement comes almost a year after the University began exploring an opportunity to open a satellite campus in Placer County. In August 2007, a 1,100-acre donation of land in Roseville, Calif. was offered to the University by the Tsakopoulos family, which owns AKT Development Corp., a prominent west coast land development company, and its partners. The potential plan includes building a 6,000 undergraduate program campus.
Beginning in January 2009, the University's "Sacramento Center" will offer master's programs in business administration, engineering management, higher education, information systems and library and information science. By September 2009, the University will also add masters programs in nursing education & faculty role; nursing leadership in health systems management; science of instruction; and human resource development.
According to Tobey Oxholm, executive vice president and chief of staff at Drexel, the programs were chosen because of their quality and prestige.
"If we're going to make a jump to a location at a distance like California and plant our flag in a different market, we wanted to lead with our strengths. So we've led with the degree programs where we have national rankings."
The programs are intended to address the scheduling needs of working adults and will be offered at One Capitol Mall, a corporate park in Sacramento which is also owned by Tsakopoulos' AKT Development Corp. Most classes will be offered at night and some on weekends.
University officials, including Oxholm, Lebow College of Business Dean George Tsetsekos, Assistant Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions Marcia Gardner, Board of Trustees member Renee Amoore and Drexel's mascot, Mario the Dragon, were in Sacramento May 22 for the announcement of Drexel's Center for Graduate Studies at an afternoon news conference.

Drexel University should Not open a campus in Sacramento, CA. Papadakis wants to export the Drexel brand to other parts of the country, but we have to ask, what are his aspirations for the University? Should Drexel aspire to be a ubiquitous University of Phoenix or something better? To put it in terms of branding that Papadakis would appreciate,
do you want a Timex or a Rolex? These are extremes of the spectrum, but we all hope that Drexel should aspire for the latter. (Continued…)

President Papadakis has aspirations for the University, one of which is to increase national rankings. Now national rankings, such as those in U.S. News and World Report are determined largely by the views and opinions of other university presidents. (Continued…)
