Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and Delta Zeta sorority were crowned champions May 9 for Greek Week, in which all of fraternities and sororities on campus compete in events ranging from talent to strength and agility.

"It's a competition between all of us, but we're showing Greek pride," Mike Ruggieri, Pi Kappa Alpha president, said.

Delta Zeta placed first in the Pipino five-kilometer run, the Lancaster Walk block paintings, "Step-to-Stroll," the swim relays and the tug of war, according to Kim Boyle, the sorority's president.

Boyle said the championship came down to the tug of war, the last Greek Week event, with Delta Zeta winning by six points overall.

Pi Kappa Alpha placed first in the talent show, "Step-to-Stroll," arm wrestling, the tricycle race, the chariot race and the tug of war, according to Ruggieri.

This year, the tug of war was moved inside from the volleyball courts to the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

"When they moved it inside, I thought that it might hurt us," Ruggieri said. "That was one thing that I didn't know how it was going to work."

Although Greek Week is a time of competition, Boyle and Ruggieri agreed that it's first and foremost about unity.

"I think that sometimes we get wrapped up in winning Greek Week, but it's really about bringing the individuals of each chapter together," Boyle said.

Greek Week is also a great recruiting tool, according to Ruggieri, because it shows how everyone comes together and sheds a better light on fraternities and sororities.

"I think it's really trying to battle the stereotypes [against fraternities and sororities] like partying and drinking," Boyle said.

This is Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Zeta's second consecutive year winning Greek Week together. Karen Brown and Bryant Nelson served as Greek life chairs for Delta Zeta and Pi Kappa Alpha, respectively.
