Drexel's fraternities and sororities came together this week to kick off the annual "Greek Week" events on campus, with events ranging from "chariot" races to water relays.
Greek Week traditionally consists of five days of competition between each fraternity and sorority, and each year, a Greek Week champion is announced at the culmination of five days of competing. Last year's winners were Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Zeta.
Stephanie Stayton, a senior psychology major, is serving as this year's chair for the Panhellenic Council, one of the three chairs on the council for Greek Week.
"It's hard to put it into one sentence, because it's something that the entire community looks forward to, literally from the day Greek Week is over, to the day it starts again the next year," Stayton said. "Basically, all the chapters come together to showcase to the community our athleticism, involvement and philanthropy."
According to Stayton, there are both daytime and nighttime events throughout the week. Stayton added that the chariot race, held May 5, is the toughest of the events.
"The chariot race is very barbaric," she said. "Each chapter builds a chariot, and you have to run down the street between 34th and 33rd, and you're so afraid someone is going to fall out, run into a car; it's just very scary."
Freshman and Pi Kappa Alpha brother Brandon Blakey was the rider for his fraternity in this year's chariot races-Pi Kappa Alpha won the race, along with Phi Mu.
"It was really nerve-wracking at first," Blakey said. "But after I got started and got into it, it was exciting, really thrilling."
In addition to the chariot races, there were swim relays May 6, a "Step-to-Stroll" talent competition May 7 and a talent show May 8. The final event, a tug-of-war competition, will take place May 9.
