As part of Drexel University's ongoing "green" efforts, the University's Sierra Club hosted a "Rock for Roots" concert at the 33rd Street armory April 26.

The concert featured bands Papa Midnight, Drop Collective, Leiana, Breaking the Silence and Matt Duke, all of whom agreed to donate their time for the benefit concert.

According to freshman Adrian Lu, one of the concert's organizers, the goal of the concert was to gather enough recyclables to show that Drexel was making an effort to improve their environmental track record.
"[We wanted to] "show the region of Philadelphia and the nearby regions that Drexel does care about the environment," Lu said.

Students gained entry to the concert by bringing two recyclable products such as glass bottles or aluminum cans, and all the collected items will be given to the University to be recycled.

"Basically, we want to show the city of Philadelphia how much Drexel is trying to move towards the greener future," freshman Alex Smith, the event's other organizer, said.

The event was met with mixed reactions from the student body.

Some students, such as Matthew Huang, said the event was a good way to make students more aware of environmental issues.

"Getting the message out to the student body isn't an easy thing to do, because honestly, who wants to sit through lectures about it when we can be outside enjoying the warm weather? At least with a concert I get to hear some decent music," Huang said.
However, some students expressed disappointment in the event and said it was not effective because there was not enough publicity leading up to the concert.

Although the event had been put in the Drexel Daily Digest, it at first had the wrong day printed, stating that the concert was going to be on April 25 instead of April 26.

This is the first year this event was held; both Smith and Lu said they would like it to become an annual event. The duo said they also aspire to bring more well-known bands to campus for their future concerts.

Natural Cures

It is a way to raise awareness that is a lot more fun than just a lecture. By not eating meat, you do more to help the ecology of the planet and protect against global warming than doing anything else including switching to a hybrid car. (Continued…)
