Green is in. Everywhere you look, companies are touting their "greening" initiatives. From hybrid cars or luxury green apartments, green also seems to be a way for companies to pocket more green.

That is why it is important to question what environmentally friendly plans really help our earth. As we finish Earth Week 2008, we recognize that Drexel has shown its commitment to the environment and has an initiative to ensure our University is sustainable.

The Drexel Committee on Sustainability consists of over 30 students and is an initiative supported by Dean of Students David Ruth, as well as Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff Tobey Oxholm. The group has been working over the past several weeks to educate the Drexel community about our University's environmental footprint. Instead of buying into anything with the green label, the committee is taking a careful approach to learn the facts, then issue policy recommendations.

The Editorial Board of The Triangle applauds this effort for its intelligence and support from senior University officials.

One of the most public acts carried out by the committee has been the meeting of University administrators and students. In these meetings, students are able to hear a surprisingly detailed report from some of the more unseen University departments about the environmental impact of campus operations. A full list of the presentations, including videos of past meetings, can be found at www.drexel.edu/sustainability.

Global events like climate change, rising fuel prices and food prices are making green initiatives imperative. Societies as a whole need to make drastic changes to their cultures in order protect the environment in which we live. While some may wait for changes to come from the top - from things like government-imposed changes and giant organizations - environmental responsibility is everyone's task. We can't afford to wait for others to save our planet. Everybody needs to clean up their act - these days, literally.
