The second annual Relay for Life event took place in the Armory April 12, with fundraising activities for students including a root beer pong tournament, a Miss Relay pageant, and a Luminaria ceremony, according to Joe Berta, co-chair of Relay for Life.
The event, sponsored by the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, spanned for 14 hours, from 5 p.m. on April 12 to 7 p.m. on April 13.
There were 38 teams with a total of 314 participants that raised over $41,000, double the goal that the American Cancer Society set for them in November 2007, according to Anthony Ambriz, chairman of Relay for Life.
"I think it could be the highest student fundraising event from a student organization [at Drexel]," Ambriz said.
"I think Drexel really understands that it's fundraising," Carly Chizik, committee income development specialist for ACS, said. "It's about having fun, but going above and beyond that."
However, planning and fundraising for the Hollywood-themed event began in November 2007 and will not end until August.
"We contacted every student organization and asked if they wanted to join or make a team," Ambriz said.
Team leader for the America's Next Top Model team, Lauren Reiter, said Relay has always been important to her because of her sister.
"When my sister was sick, I saw the whole community pull together and help my family out," Reiter said.
"Relay for Life really reflected the togetherness of this community," she added.
"We came to realize that despite some differences, there's a common unity among [student organizations]," Ambriz said.
Reiter held a pasta dinner in Race Street Residence that raised $193.80.
One of the events that brought the students and the community together was the Miss Relay pageant, in which men dressed as women; to win, they had to raise the most money.
Chizik said the Miss Relay Pageant was one of the funniest things she has ever seen while raising $280 during the pageant.
