Ben Folds selected as Spring Jam headlining act

The Campus Activities Board has selected Ben Folds as the headlining act for Spring Jam, the student organization's annual free concert and festival.
Ben Folds was picked out of over 100 bands that were originally suggested by students on CAB's web site and on their Facebook group.
"Ben Folds' name came up a couple of times; he was a pretty popular choice," Anu Singh, assistant director for traditions and the lead organizer of this year's Spring Jam, said.
The other bands considered were One Republic, Gym Class Heroes and Jason Mraz.
"There are so many issues involved with having a band come over," Singh said. "Our Spring Jam is around the time other colleges are finished with their spring events. The bands are actually wrapping up and heading home … so sometimes it makes it a little more difficult."
Cost also makes booking artists difficult, according to Singh. This year, CAB's budget, which is funded by the Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee (SAFAC), was similar to last year's for booking Spring Jam artists and putting on the event.
For fiscal year 2008, CAB received just under $400,000 in funding, with another $93,000 in reserve funds. The funds are used to hold all CAB events throughout the entire school year.
Spring Jam will be held April 10 and will feature free food, comedy, games and music.
This year, a comedy troupe called 5th Year Comedy will perform between music acts. Also, there will be a kick-off event May 6 prior to the main event May 10.
Julia Nunes, an up-and-coming artist on tour with Ben Folds, will be opening for him at Spring Jam.
This year, Singh said the event will be shorter than past years.
"We want to get things get done faster so people are not standing around waiting the whole time," she said.
The top three bands from CAB's April 19 Battle of the Bands will also open for Ben Folds.
Folds is the former front man of Ben Folds Five, who had hits like "Brick," "Army" and "Battle of Who Could Care Less."
Since 2001, Folds has embarked on a solo career and has since put out five albums, including 2001's "Rockin' the Suburbs" and the latest 2006 release, "Supersunnyspeedgraphic: The LP," which includes titles like "Bitches Ain't Shit" and "All U Can Eat."
Editor's Note: This story has been corrected. CAB's budget is not roughly $400,000, as reported in the April 18 issue of The Triangle, but is actually approximately $280,000.
