The Drexel men's lacrosse team will want to emulate its balanced scoring effort against Robert Morris in upcoming conference road games against rivals Delaware and Hofstra.
Andrew Chapman scored three goals and was one of six Dragons to find the net as Drexel defeated the Colonials 11-7 Apr. 5 at Vidas Field.
"It's a conference and we'll take it," Drexel head coach Chris Bates said. "We know what looms on the horizon and I think every conference game is obviously big for us. I give Robert Morris credit. I think they do a good job with those guys and they're competitive. You know I think the stats favored us but if you watched the game it definitely was a ballgame so we're happy to get out with the 'W.'"
Adam Dennis, Ron Garling and Scott Perri each added a pair of goals for the No. 10 Dragons (9-2 2-0 CAA), who moved into the top 10 in the USILA Poll for the first time in school history after their double overtime win against Hofstra. Greg Casey and Mike McTernan had one goal apiece while Colin Ambler had two assists.
"When we're good offensively it's when we share the ball and it doesn't matter who puts it in the back of the net," Bates said of his team's scoring balance. "You know we've got more skill on that end of the field and when we share it so it's nice to have it distributed and get a lot of guys involved, so I was happy with that today."
Drexel, which jumped out scoring all four goals in the first quarter, led just 4-3 at halftime after giving up three goals in the final 2:54 of the second quarter.
However, the Dragons made adjustments at halftime and played a solid third quarter.
Garling scored just eight seconds in off a pass from Nick Kusturiss making it 5-3. Perri made it a three-goal game when he took a perfect Ambler pass right out in front of the net and scored.
Chapman followed, scoring his team-leading 25th and 26th goals of the season, completing his hat trick and putting Drexel up five.
The Dragons led by as many as six after McTernan tallied and 11-5 before Robert Morris (4-7, 0-3) scored two goals in the final minute of the game.
"I just thought we didn't play well with a lead," Bates said. "I thought we dominated the first quarter and then we had some lapses defensively in the second quarter … Thankfully we came out in the beginning of the third quarter with a lot of energy and got a couple so we kind of got back on track. We gave up some ones late which were unnecessary, but we did enough to win."
Bruce Bickford made 17 saves for Drexel. The Dragons outshot the Colonials 44-37 and led 33-23 in groundballs.
Game Notes: Drexel improved to 5-1 at home. … Its only loss was to No. 1 Virginia in the season opener. … Kusturiss was 7-of-11 in face-offs. … The Dragons were 12-of-22 as a team. … Ryan West was named CAA Co-Player of the Week for the period ending March 30. … West is 31-of-50 on face-off attempts this season.
