The Committee of Seventy, a non-partisan organization that provides volunteers to help with the political elections, is working with the Center for Civic Engagement to recruit student volunteers for the primary and general elections this year.

"Drexel volunteers are very important part of citywide programs to help the election run smooth," Zachary Stalberg, president and CEO of the Committee of Seventy, said.

According to Stalberg, the voting process is a pretty fragile operation and the volunteers help to make things go easily and smoothly.

"The point of Drexel volunteers that are involved [is] to help to make it the most effective elections possible," Stalberg said.

Tom Dahan, program director for the Center for Civic Engagement, said he feels this is a great election and great opportunity for students to get involved.

"In my opinion, this is probably one of the most civically engaging opportunities that we provide. It makes sure that the civil rights of other are being protected," Dahan said.

This election is also one that will have an effect specifically in Pennsylvania, according to Stalberg.

"[This election] is different on a national and Philadelphia level. In Pennsylvania in particular, it's been long time since the state has had any real effect. There is an excellent chance that how Philadelphia and suburbs vote will affect who will win," Stalberg said.

The University of Pennsylvania and Temple University are involved with the Committee of Seventy but not at the level that Drexel is, according to Stalberg.

"We have worked with [the Committee of Seventy] for the past two years," Dahan said.

Drexel began working with the Committee of Seventy when Brian Keech and Stalberg made an agreement last year to provide volunteers, and the CCE was able to get 45 people, even though the goal was much higher.

The goal for this primary election was 50 to 75 volunteers and the CCE currently has 61 volunteers signed up.
