Goldberg added that after taking a studio space with a college friend, her career took something of a lift.

"We were each other's muses," Goldberg said. "I think that was a turning point for me, where I understood that having a business partner, having somebody who's a kindred spirit, who has an investment in your work, and you have an investment in theirs, it really kept me going."

Goldberg said though there were many times where her prospects looked bleak and her career was not easy, she remained optimistic.

"I always reminded myself that I was happy doing it independently, and that the freedom to make those choices is worth the sacrifices," Goldberg said.

Goldberg's first "visible" independent project was her cover for Madonna's first CD. Goldberg said that though it was her most widely-known project, it was not one she enjoyed most.

"People don't remember you for your best work, they remember you for the kind of pop culture iconic things that you might have done. And it's perfectly nice to be able to say that you have worked with Madonna, but so what?" Goldberg said. "If you buy into the perception that people have about your career, you'll never have good work."

Goldberg has, in her own right, stirred up controversy with her work. In response to a 1989 accusation that she was "pillaging history" with her work, Goldberg said all artists take inspiration from past work.

"It's interesting," Goldberg said. "I've told people that when all of this went down, it was at a point in my career where I was very busy working. I had a one-year-old child, and I had a business, and I wasn't really listening. It was out of my radar, and I guess the thing I feel most content about is the fact that I was just busy making work."

Goldberg said she has not received much negative criticism for her work, and has generally received positive reactions, though she does not get complacent with praise.

"I'm never satisfied with my work, truthfully, but I'm very satisfied with my career. You always want more, and you're always looking for the better job," Goldberg said. "I'm very proud of what I've done as a professional. I hate everything five minutes after I do, but that's a whole another conversation."
