Students will now be able to participate in Drexel Bike Share, an alternative to taking SEPTA or keeping a car on campus.
Drexel Parking Services, through the Power of Ten program, will allow students to rent bikes for a weekday or an entire weekend free of charge.
Drexel Bike Share is available to all students in good standing, as well as faculty and staff. Bikes are checked out of the Parking Services Office, located at 3300 Market St. in the parking garage, Suite 124, also known as the "Hub."
Students are excited about the prospect of a bike-sharing program at Drexel. Sonia Woleti, a freshman biology major said that, "it's a cool idea. … [I] would probably use it, it'd be nice for a change."
Michael Ansberry, a freshman physical therapy major said that, "I think it's a really good idea… lots of people need a bike every once in a while, but not everyday, so it's not realistic to own one."
Some students also had concerns, such as Venkat Kavuri, freshman biology major, "I think it's a really intelligent idea, and a nice alternative to SEPTA, but I would be worried about the bikes being stolen.
There are currently ten TREK Lime bikes available on a "first come, first served" basis. The bikes come with a helmet, U-lock, cable and lock key. All of the bikes have adjustable seats, coaster breaks, and an automatic three-speed gear system according to the Drexel Bike Share announcement.
To use the Drexel Bike Share, students can visit www.drexel.edu/park and click on "Bike Share." The final step is to read and agree to the user policy and Drexel Bike Share Membership Agreement. Each time users check equipment out, they also need to complete the Drexel Bike Share User, which holds them liable for up to $600 if the equipment is lost, stolen, or damaged according to the parking services web site.
Bikes can be rented between 8 a.m and 4:30 p.m, and bikes must be returned the next day at the same time that they were rented. In the case of weekends, a bike rented Friday must be returned the same time Monday. Bikes rented before a holiday must be returned at the same on the next business day. Parking Services also reserves the right to suspend member privileges in the event of Failure to return equipment on time.
When returning bikes, members are asked to return the equipment to the correct rack, lock it, and return the helmet and key to the parking office.
