To relieve the stress students face the week before finals, graduate students at the Center City Hahnemann Campus in the Creative Arts in Therapy program organized drum circles with dancing.
The point was not only to provide a stress release, but to also raise awareness of National Creative Arts Therapy Week. This week is dedicated to providing information to the public about the benefits of art, dance/movement, music, poetry, and drama therapy.
Onlookers were encouraged to participate by students and faculty of the program, and participants ranged from Drexel students to doctors to security guards.
"People are drawn to the rhythm created by the drum. It is an instrument that everyone can relate to," Sherry Goodill, director of the Creative Arts in Therapy program, said. "Art Therapy is about the process of making art and not the finished product. It is about expressing your feelings."
There are about 100 students in the program. Each will graduate with a Masters in Art Therapy, Dance Movement Therapy or Music Therapy. Students enter the program with a background in the art medium of their concentration as well as psychology.
