Penn student held captive in apartment
A University of Pennsylvania student was held captive by three thieves who stole his credit cards and ransacked his West Philly apartment the night of March 9, the Philadelphia Daily News reported.
The men who broke in finally left the apartment at about 11:30 a.m. March 10, and began shopping, draining the student's ATM accounts and charging his credit card.
One of the thieves was caught at 23rd and Walnut streets, after using the victim's credit card at a Rite Aid, the Daily News reported.
Earlier in the day, neighbors in the Castle Hill apartments looked on as investigators walked through the crime scene.
"There's no security at all," Chang, a neighbor who asked that his last name not be used, told the Daily News.
Emu leads police on chase
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, a six-foot-tall emu escaped from a farm in Bucks County, resulting in a two-hour-long chase through Doylestown neighborhoods.
The owner of an emu ranch called the police to report that one of the birds had escaped March 10. It was spotted on March 11 by a Doylestown resident, and police gave pursuit until around 11 a.m., when the bird finally surrendered.
"It laid down," Stephen White, police chief of the Doylestown, said. "That's how we were able to finally catch up to it."
The bird was then reunited with its flock.
Fumo to retire at end of term
Pennsylvania Sen. Vincent Fumo will drop out of the race for re-election, ending an over 30-year career, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Fumo cited the 'cloud' of indictment as the main reason. He made the announcement at a press conference at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the Inquirer reported.
City Council members expressed their disappointment, saying it was a significant loss for the city, but showed their support for Fumo's decision.
"It's the best thing he could've done for his family, health, and emotional state," Councilman Jim Kenny, a longtime friend of Fumo's, said.
