After a sloppy start on Senior Day, the Drexel Dragons (17-11, 12-5 CAA) relied on their underclassmen to lead them to a 62-58 come-from-behind-victory over the George Mason Patriots (9-19, 3-14 CAA).
Senior forward Delise Johnson and guards Anora Suber, Narissa Suber and Stacy McCullough were honored prior to the game, which might have contributed to Drexel's sluggish start.
"It's an emotional day," Coach Denise Dillion said. "These seniors have had a great four years here at Drexel and they just want to go out on a high note. There's that emotion, there's that pressure they put on themselves, but they pulled through and supported each other and their underclassmen helped them along the way."
Sophomore superstar Gabriela Marginean and freshman sensation Jasmina Roseel scored 44 of Drexel's 62 points and sparked the Dragon's second-half comeback.
The first half was marred by turnovers and poor shooting. Drexel shot 31 percent from the field and only scored two points in the last 5:12 of the half.
The seniors helped the team gather their composure after halftime and the Dragons stormed back to tie the game at 43-43 on a Jasmina Roseel layup with 9:53 remaining.
"I pulled them together and said, 'We're not losing on our senior day,'" Narissa said.
After George Mason regained the lead on a Lateisha Wade free throw, Marginean scored eight of Drexel's next 10 points to put the Dragons ahead for good. Marginean finished with a game-high 26 points and pulled down six rebounds.
The Dragons relied on defense to turn the game around. The CAA's top defensive team was able to limit the Patriots leading scorer Wade to only six points while holding George Mason to 39 percent shooting in the second half.
