The band's second release finds itself in an interesting category of its own. Its subject matter mostly revolves around fantasy-like stories of ruthlessly murderous characters, and epic battles - no love, no sadness, just musical bloodiness. Like "Kezia," the band's first album, Protest The Hero showcases their no-fear-progressive sound, and skewed time signatures. "Fortress" is filled with soaring melodies, reminiscent of Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickenson, with the occasional schizophrenic scream ("Bloodmeat"), and the usual crunchy guitar licks.
On songs like "Bone Marrow," the band enhances its sound with strings too. Almost every song on this album is strange, epic, and memorable.
Protest the Hero is currently embarking on an extensive U.S. tour with Silverstein. On Feb. 23, Protest The Hero will bring their avant-garde, rock star sound to the Trocadero. "Fortress" is available now on Vagrant Records for your head-banging, seizure-inducing pleasure.
