The Drexel University pre-junior struck by a SEPTA bus Feb. 6 is recovering after undergoing surgery, according to family members and University officials.
The student, identified as Michelle Cwanger, a communications pre-junior, was rushed to the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania in critical condition after the accident.
A family member said Cwanger is doing better than expected.
"She is really doing better than everyone expected," said a family member who asked not to be identified.
Cwanger did not suffer any neurological or long-term injuries according to the family member.
The family member said Cwanger was not ready for visitors but she would appreciate cards from the Drexel community.
Candace Wannamaker, director of support services for Drexel Public Safety, responded to the emergency room immediately after the accident and has been assisting the family.
"[Cwanger's father] said that they are thankful for all that her Drexel family is doing to help her through this. I told him that many students were asking about Michelle and her condition. They were very touched," Wannamaker said in an e-mail.
Although still in pain and confined to a hospital, Wannamaker said she was struck at how polite and friendly Cwanger remains.
"She is truly a remarkable kid with amazing spirit. She was pleasant and smiling and thankful for the visit. Although she is not up for masses of visitors yet," Wannamaker added.
The accident occurred at 32nd and Market Street intersection and several students report seeing it happen.
Wannamaker said she is coordinating with other University officials to send a card to Cwanger.
While the Cwanger recovers, officials at SEPTA are continuing their investigation.
Officials at SEPTA Police or System Safety Unit could not be reached for comment at the time of this writing.
SEPTA spokesman Gary Fairfax said he would follow up with additional information about the investigation.
