The men's basketball team was hoping to start a winning streak against one of its biggest rivals in the CAA.
After trailing 41-36 with 14 minutes remaining in the game, Drexel went on an 11-4 run to get its biggest of the game.
But Drexel only made four field goals in the last 8:30, including two meaningless field goals in the last 40 seconds.
Drexel lost to Hofstra 67-58 Jan. 19 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Frank Elegar had game highs of 23 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks for Drexel (9-10, 2-5 CAA). Hawthorne added to the Drexel attack, scoring 13 points, including 4-of-7 shooting from the 3-point line.
Charles Jenkins had a team-high 21 points and a game-high six steals for Hofstra (4-12, 2-5). Dane Johnson had 17 points and Greg Johnson had 15 points.
Six of the past nine meetings between Drexel and Hofstra, prior to this one, have been decided by two points or less or have gone into overtime. Last season, both teams lost in overtime on their home courts.
Despite the two teams' struggles in the conference this season, it was a competitive battle throughout the game.
Unfortunately for Drexel, in the closing minutes, the game got out of control.
Drexel shot 38.2 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from 3-point line. It also got out rebounded by Hofstra 37-30.
Drexel coach Brusier Flint said it was frustrating when his team wasn't making open shots.
"You've seen us play offense at times," Flint said. But you gotta give Hofstra credit today. We've been doing this all season. [We're] there one game, but not the next. They made big plays when they needed to and we didn't. That's what it came down to."
The Pride shot well from the field, hitting 52.2 percent of their shots and 76.9 percent of their free throws. Meanwhile, the Dragons struggled from the line, hitting only 63.2 percent of the shots from the charity stripe.
Coming into the game, Hofstra had not won a road game through 15 games this season.
