Possible Rise in Philly Taxi Rates
Members of the taxi industry joined together Jan. 17 to press for an increase in the fare that would raise the cost of the average cab ride in Philadelphia from $9.15 to $9.87, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
However, drivers fear the money will end up in the hands of the taxi company owners while scaring away the riders.
The Philadelphia Parking Authority is considering a proposal that will increase fares including "flag drop" rates from $2.30 to $2.70, chargers per mile from $2.10 to $2.30, and per hour chargers from $20 to $22, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
There is no set deadline to approve the current proposal, according to the Inquirer article.
New program targets gangs, violence in South Philadelphia
A new project proposal, the Juvenile Gang and Violence Intervention Program, led by Administrative Judge Kevin M. Dougherty and Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey, is sending a message to teen gangsters in South Philadelphia, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
"Land in court and expect to 'kiss your mother goodbye' - because street violence will no longer be tolerated," Ramsey told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The program is also teaming with the 17th District police officers with the Philadelphia Family Court's Juvenile Probation Department. About 6,000 youths are on probation at any given time, according to the Inquirer article.
New Jersey man, 70, drives into river to escape police
A 70-year-old man from Bridgeton, N.J., drove his van into the Cohansy River in order to escape the police who responded to a Mount Vernon Street home after reports of a stabbing there, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Patrolman Ed Connolly attempted to save the man, Julio Vigio, but could not withstand the frigid water conditions. However, fireman George Roberson was able to drag Vigio out the back window of the van to safety, according to the Inquirer article.
