Gabriela Marginean led Drexel with 20 points, and the women's team held Hofstra to a team record-low 30 points in a 59-30 victory which extended its winning streak to five.

Defense has been the M.O. for the Dragons' recent success, and they punctuated it with a dominating defensive performance over Hofstra Jan. 6 en route to a 59-30 victory at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

Drexel (6-6, 1-0 CAA) allowed the fewest points in school history in the rout. The Dragons constantly had a hand in the face of the Hofstra (2-10, 0-1 CAA) shooters. The Pride shot an anemic 25 percent from the field and they hit only 1-of-14 attempts from beyond the arc.

Drexel coach Denise Dillon stressed the importance of starting conference play with a win.

"We put last year behind us, but it's something you keep in the back of your head to remember how tough each and every game was," Dillon said. "To start on a high note is key."

Brooke Cornish led the way with four blocks, matching a career-high set in the previous game against Mount St. Mary's. She had two of her blocks on one play. Kristina Campbell tried for a transition layup, only to get rejected by Cornish. Aamira Terry grabbed the rebound only to get her shot swatted away. Nicole Hester then snatched the board and Narissa Suber hit a 3-pointer on the other end.

It was that kind of day for the Dragons.

"Defensively, the girls are doing a nice job," Dillon said. "They're definitely working together and communicating. We pounded this into their heads and now they're buying into it. If they talk to each other, help each other out, it makes a lot of things easier on the defensive end."

The win was the fifth straight for the Dragons. During the streak, the team has given up just 46.6 points per game and opponents have shot just 31 percent from the floor.

"We're on a roll," Drexel forward Gabriela Marginean said. "We struggled at the beginning of the season. We knew it was coming. We work hard and we are a good team."

Drexel more than held its own on offense. Marginean led all players with 20 points and eight rebounds. After the Pride jumped to a 4-0 lead, she had a personal 10-4 run to kick start the Dragon offense.

Drexel had two big runs to put the game out of reach early on. The Dragons used an 11-0 run to build an 18-8 lead early in the first half. Minutes later, Drexel used six different scorers in a 15-0 run to put the game away for good.

"It doesn't matter what their record may be," Dillon said in reference to Hofstra's slow start. "It is a program that built themselves up to get to the NIT last season and have some players who are now playing professionally. It certainly is a key win just to boost some confidence for our club."

Hester had a solid line with nine points, seven rebounds and a team-leading five assists.

Narissa Suber also finished with nine points, but she did it on 4-4 shooting.

Britne Rodgers was the only Hofstra player in double figures with 11.

The previous low for points allowed was against George Mason Jan. 22, 2006 in a 38-36 win. They get a chance to play the Patriots Jan. 13 in Fairfax.
