After ending their four-game losing streak, the Dragons were looking to run their winning streak up to three just in time for New Year's.

Drexel fell behind by 10 late in the first half, but had a chance to cut its deficit to one. But Tramayne Hawthorne missed a three with 17:43 left in the game and the Dragons never got any closer the rest of the way.

Drexel (7-6) fell to St. Joseph's (7-4) 69-51 Dec. 31 at the Palestra.

There wasn't much offense stirring for Drexel outside of Randy Oveneke and Frank Elegar.

Oveneke had a career-high 18 points and Elegar picked up 17 points and eight rebounds. They combined to shoot 12-for-18 from the field. Outside of them, Drexel managed to shoot just 4-of-30 field goals for the game, or 13 percent.

"You gotta make some baskets," Drexel coach Bruiser Flint said. "You can't go into every game shooting 27 percent."

For the Hawks, Pat Calathes had 20 points, five assists, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Rob Ferguson added 11 points, eight boards and four blocks.

It was difficult for the Dragons to make any run in the second half with the way they struggled shooting the ball. They shot 27 percent from the field and only seven percent from beyond-the-arc in the second frame and made just seven field goals.

"Obviously right now, Bruiser is struggling to score the ball. We wanted to take advantage of that," St. Joe's coach Phil Martelli said. "What they are is a streaky 3-point shooting team."

The Hawks were up by 14 with under nine to play in regulation, when Drexel released some of its frustration.

Coach Flint got into a few arguments with the referees about traveling violations. After Hawthorne was hit with a personal foul with 8:46 remaining in the second half, Flint was called for a technical foul.

Elegar was 4-for-4 from the field and had nine points in the first half. Drexel only took two free throws in the first half, making just one of them. It also struggled from the 3-point line, hitting only one of its six shots.

After starting out 5-1, Drexel has lost five of its last seven games. All those losses were by double digits. Nevertheless, Flint tried to remind the media that his team still has

a winning record.

"We're still winning," Flint said. "People still have to remember that."

Game Notes:

Drexel's biggest lead of the game was two, when Oveneke made the first basket of the game. … Flint discussed Elegar's and Hawthorne's injuries. "[Elegar and Hawthorne] are getting there," Flint said. "I wouldn't say they're 100 percent. They're a lot healthier than they were two weeks ago. … The Hawks lead Drexel 43-7 in a series dating back to 1920. … This was the sixth straight year that the teams met in the Palestra.
