Philadelphia's new Mayor, Michael Nutter, attended the welcome reception for Olympic and National Team Trials for Table Tennis on Jan. 9 at the Paul Peck Alumni Center.

The Mayor's visit was an important step for Drexel, according to Eric Zillmer, Drexel University's athletic director.

"To have the Mayor come on his second day of tenure is a good thing for Drexel," Zillmer said.

Nutter's appearance was beneficial for Drexel, as well as for Philadelphia on a larger scale, according to Zillmer.

"We wanted him to come because it's great for Drexel, and because it's also great for Philadelphia," Zillmer said.

Zillmer emphasized the strength of the relationship between Drexel and Philadelphia as a city, as well as the University's partnership with the government.

"We're a Philadelphia school. We have co-ops throughout the city. We're very business-oriented. We need a city that's alive, that's dynamic, that works with Drexel and it's educational components. We're on the map. We need to work with city government,"

Zillmer said. "Michael Nutter is a fresh breath of air. Like he says, it's a new day, a new way."

The strong tie between Drexel and the new city government was emphasized by University President Constantine Papadakis as well.

"The university is an engine for economic development," Papadakis said. "Mayor Nutter knows the value of higher education for the city of Philadelphia. He appreciates it and is going to be our friend."

Papadakis added that Nutter's appearance at Drexel was significant in that it showed the his desire to be connected with both the school and the city.

"The mayor has to be the cheerleader for the city. You can't do that if you're closed in an office. We were very happy to have him here tonight, and we think that we are going to see him very often at Drexel and our events," Papadakis said.

Nutter expressed his enthusiasm for the event in his speech at the reception.
