The Independent Music Awards were started to help Indie artists compete with major labels. This year, MAD Dragon received the IMA's first-ever College Record Label Award.

Independent Music Awards, which recognizes Indie artists worldwide, presented their first-ever College Record Label Award on Dec. 18 to MAD Dragon.

MAD Dragon won for Hoots & Hellmouth's album, and placed as a finalist for Andrew Lipke's album "The Way Home."

"We were very pleased with the college label submissions; we did not know what to expect. … [We were] floored by the professional quality of the schools," Independent Music Awards Director, Martin Folkman, said.

MAD Dragon CEO Marcy Rauer Wagman and President Terry Tompkins both said they were proud that their label was recognized. Wagman said that MAD Dragon is "consistently turning out the best music that they can give to the public … this [award] will bring national recognition to the program."

Tompkins said that each time MAD Dragon has released a record, they have set higher standards and this award rewards that effort.

"All of the winners are put on to CDs that are sent to radio stations, which is a big benefit to [the artists] because it can cost $1,000 to $2,000 for radio promotion," Folkman said.

The winners are also featured on eMusic and PureVolume and receive a year of promotion in broadcast, print and online.

Awards are given out for Blues Album, Dance/Electronica Album, Children's Album, Jazz Album, Pop/Rock Song, Alternative Country Album, Pop/Rock Album, Country Song and Punk Song. New categories were Music for Children, College Label and Music Video.

The entries, submitted by artists and labels, are narrowed down to five finalists by industry insiders, press, Artists & Repertoire representatives and other artists, according to Tompkins.

Ultimately, the winner is chosen by celebrity judges. Some judges this year included Snoop Dogg, MTV Music Supervisor Carrie Hughes, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith, My Chemical Romance's Frank Iero and Simple Plan's Chuck Comeau.

Fans can also vote for their favorite artists in Vox Populi until February 2008.

The Vox Populi favorites will receive the same promotions as the Independent Music Award winners.

The Independent Music Awards was started to help Indie artists compete with major labels, and this year marked the seventh Independent Music Awards show.

The other college finalists were Florida State University, New York University and University of Colorado at Denver.
