Nutter receives federal grant for emergency communications program

A $656,000 grant will be given to Philadelphia as the first step in a $10 million project to improve communications between SEPTA police and Philadelphia police, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The grant, funded from the transportation spending bill signed into law Dec. 26, will support resources for underground communications in case of emergencies, according to the Inquirer article.

The grant is the first funding that this project has received, and no set time line has yet been identified.

Four wounded, one dead in police shooting

An East Germantown man who was shot by police on New Year's Eve died Jan. 7, and homicide detectives are now investigating the case, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The victim, Abebe Isaac, 33, was shot five times - on his face, forearm, back, calf and thigh - when police officer George Marko fired 11 shots while responding to a report of a man "shooting into the air."

Marko was in a medically induced coma and briefly regained consciousness last week, according to his family.

Isaac was one of four men wounded by Marko's shots at a New Year's Eve party, and the

District Attorney's office must now decide if they will file criminal charges against Marko.

Marko and his partner, Joseph Kelly were called to a house when a police radio dispatcher reported shots fired at midnight. The two officers said Dontate Mitchell, 21, the gunman, was shooting into the air, and Marko fired 11 shots when Mitchell pointed his gun at him.

The three other people wounded during the shooting included Nyger Page, 9, Michael Johnson, 32 and Mitchell.

Following the shooting, police arrested a guest resembling Mitchell's description; however, the next day party guests identified Mitchell, who fled the scene during the shooting, and the arrested guest was released.

Mitchell was charged with firearms violations and endangering the welfare of others.
