First snow of year hits Philly

Philadelphia recorded its first measurable amount of snow for the season this week. The snow started late in the morning and built into a steady snowfall by evening.

According to an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the reported totals ranged from 3.5 inches in Gloucester County and 3 inches in Wilmington and averaged around an inch in all of Philadelphia, with 1.3 inches at the Philadelphia International Airport.

There have been no deaths and very few injuries, according to the article. The icy roads caused multiple fender-benders. There were very few serious problems, despite the fear that the snowfall would affect rush hour.

The roads remained wet during the daytime and hefty doses of salt helped prevent a traffic nightmare. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation dispatched 350 trucks to salt and the New Jersey Department of Transportation dispatched 80 trucks.

Various weather experts are predicting that that this winter will be characterized by "nuisance" storms rather than paralyzing nor'easters.

Robbery leads to straw-purchase scheme

After a home invasion and pistol-whipping attack last week in Northeast Philadelphia, authorities have begun to probe deeper into an investigation on a Germantown man who has been arrested in connection with an alleged straw-purchasing gun scheme, according to an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Philadelphia police working with the state and District Attorney's Office have announced the arrest of Sean Kelley, of the 100 block of West Logan Street. He has been charged with the illegal transferring of firearms, records tampering, conspiracy, and related offenses stemming from the home invasion.

In the attack, authorities say that five men barged into the residence of Harry Navas, pistol-whipped him and stole $2,000.

Kelley and Malik Hayes, 19, of the 8400 block of Williams Avenue, have been charged with robbery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and related offenses stemming from the attack. Seventh Police District officers said that they originally found three guns and that the discovery led them to where the guns originated.
