The Patriots had been selected as the preseason No. 1 team in the CAA, while the Dragons were picked to finish fourth in the conference.
This was the first big test for Drexel - to see if it could compete with the best.
Unfortunately for the Dragons, they didn't pass.
The Dragons (5-2, 0-1 CAA) were defeated handily by the Patriots (6-1, 1-0 CAA) 85-38, Nov. 29 at the Patriot Center.
The margin of victory was George Mason's most lopsided since beating Howard 106-55 Dec. 1, 1998, almost nine years to the day.
The 47-point win also set a new record against a CAA opponent.
"When you lose by 47, you're surprised by everything," Drexel coach Bruiser Flint said.
Dre' Smith scored a season-high 16 points and was one of four Patriots to score in double figures.
Tramayne Hawthorne scored a team-high 11 points while Gerald Colds added 10 for Drexel.
Frank Elegar, who led the team in scoring, averaging 16 ppg, was held scoreless.
"There's no need to talk about Frank," Flint said. He didn't play. He got off to a tough start."
Drexel was outplayed in every facet of the game.
The Dragons shot just 30 percent from the field to GMU's 51 percent, committed 16 turnovers compared to GMU's eight, and were out rebounded 42-28.
"We couldn't make a layup," Flint said.
Early on the Dragons trailed 6-5 at 15:57, but that's when the Patriots took over.
They outscored Drexel 34-10 the rest of the half to take a 25-point lead into the intermission.
An 18-2 run, capped by a layup by John Vaughn, gave George Mason a 24-7 lead with 9:36 left.
Tramayne Hawthorne converted a layup to cut the lead to 15, but Folarin Campbell drilled a 3-pointer, Vlad Moldoveanu hit a jumper and Will Thomas scored on a layup extending the lead to 22.
Back to back layups by Randy Oveneke and Hawthorne cut the deficit to 18, but the Patriots reeled off five consecutive points of their own to go up 38-15 with 2:35 to go.
