The students who play flag football have varying levels of experience, and play for different reasons.

Jasen Hudson, a senior majoring in information systems, said he had high school varsity flag football instead of traditional tackle football, so he came to Drexel with several years of experience of playing flag football at a high level. A transfer student, Hudson has played flag football each of his three years at Drexel.

"I rate it very high, a 10," Hudson said. "I like the competitive aspect as well as everybody has an equal chance to play."

In addition to men's teams, Drexel offers co-ed and women's leagues. These leagues accounted for about 25 percent of the teams this season. The champions of each of these leagues earns a chance to participate in the City Six challenge, a tournament of champions from LaSalle, Penn, St. Joseph's, Temple, Villanova, and Drexel.

Drexel is one of the City Six schools that always sends a champion from each league.

Hudson, like many other students, said he participates because he is a big football fan and Drexel's program gives him a chance to continue playing.

"I love the sport of football in general," he said. "It provides a great method of exercise while doing something fun."

Nicole Thompson, who participates in flag football as an athlete and student supervisor, agreeded that part of the sport's appeal is due to the popularity of football in America.

"It's the major sport in the fall, and I think football is the No. 1 sport in America," Thompson said. "It's a sport almost anybody can play, even if they have no athletic ability."

Like Koch, Thompson also said marketing was a big factor in Drexel having so many teams.

"[Intramurals] is the biggest program on campus, it's also the most well marketed," Thompson said. "You see signs for intramurals everywhere. We also make the time for every team to participate, we're out here [on Buckley Green] every night from 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m."
