"40 Minute Foes, Lifetime Heroes."
The DAC Pack presented that banner before taking on the Navy Midshipmen. It was a fitting gesture, especially on Veterans Day.
Fortunately, the Dragons did treat the Navy basketball team as foes at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Drexel used their superior firepower Nov. 11 to sink the Midshipmen 86-70.
The Dragon assault was led by Frank Elegar. He paced the team with 24 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks. It was his second double-double of the young season.
"He poses a ton of problems," Navy head coach Billy Lange said about the Drexel center. "What I really like about Bruiser's team is that even the guards, who I think are very good in Hawthorne and Rodgers, they all understand that it begins and ends with Elegar."
Navy double teamed Elegar often and kept constant defensive pressure on him. Because many teams will apply a similar strategy against him, the big man will certainly need to hit his free throws if the Dragons want to win with regularity. Elegar connected on 12 of 15, accounting for half of his point total. Elegar himself made more free throws than the rest of the team, which combined to hit 11 of 22.
"I told them that's one of those things I knew I put on your list to work on," Drexel head coach Bruiser Flint said about his team. "We've got to step up and make foul shots, and that's just guys getting up there, having confidence that they are going to make them."
Tramayne Hawthorne set a career high in points for the second consecutive game. After scoring 18 against Penn, he scored 19 on Sunday on 7-12 shooting.
"He's getting everything in the flow of the game," Flint said.
Evan Neisler played well off the bench, scoring eight and nabbing eight boards in 22 minutes of action. He has been a nice compliment to Elegar and Randy Oveneke.
"He'll be our X-Factor coming off the bench," Elegar said. "We've been working together. He pretty much knows my game and where my shots are going to come off so his anticipation is real good."
