The Philadelphia Orchestra is coming to Drexel University Nov. 27 for the first of five performances, which will take place throughout the 2007-08 academic year.
Admission to the concerts will be free of charge, because the Pennoni Honors College and Westphal College of Media Arts and Design will fund ticket money for students.
"The concerts are a product of Drexel's partnership with the Philadelphia Orchestra in the Drexel Cultural Passport," Suzanne Rocheleau, associate dean of the Pennoni Honors College, said. "We are jointly trying to grow college audiences for classical music. Since the Passport impacts a relatively small number of our students, it's hoped that the concert series will bring classical music to a somewhat broader audience."
The opening performance on Nov. 27 will be held in the Drexel Gallery, located on the third floor of the Main Building, and will showcase the dePasquale Trio. The Philadelphia Orchestra family trio is comprised of Gloria dePasquale, a Philadelphia Orchestra cellist, William dePasquale, Philadelphia Orchestra emeritus concertmaster on viola, and their daughter, Francesca, on violin.
William dePasquale and Gloria dePasquale serve on the faculty of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and co-coordinate the Philadelphia Region Youth String Music group, or PRYSM.
The Philadelphia Orchestra currently resides in the Kimmel Center at 260 S. Broad St. The company was the first American orchestra to do a transcontinental tour, and continues that tradition today.
"We are planning four more concerts for the current academic year. So far we are planning concerts in January, March, April and May, with the view of holding four to five concerts per year in subsequent years," Rocheleau said.
The orchestra's January performance may be presented in one of the residence halls, according to Rocheleau. However, all the upcoming venues remain unannounced.
