Mayor-elect Michael Nutter addressed the ways in which Drexel's eLearning program relates to his policies and can be used improve Philadelphia at the Online Learning Award Ceremony Nov. 13.

The ceremony, held in the Paul Peck Alumni Center, was a part of the first National Distance Learning Week.

Throughout Nutter's campaign, his main focus was on how only 18 percent of people in Philadelphia hold a college degree, according to Opportunity Now: The Nutter Plan for Economic Development. Now that he is Mayor-elect, he wants to encourage adults to go back to school.

"[It will] enhance their life skill training," Nutter said.

The Mayor-elect is most interested in Drexel's online learning program in particular, "Because it is one of the best around," he said.

Nutter said he hopes Drexel will continue to promote distance learning throughout Philadelphia. Kenneth Hartman, academic director of online learning, said, "His [Nutter's] dream is our mission."

Nutter was at the award ceremony because he represents a new beginning for Philadelphia and is the best person to promote the growth and novelty of online education, Hartman said.

National Distance Learning Week was established "to celebrate the most exciting event that is going on in education, which is online learning," Hartman said.

Drexel's online learning program has grown from only a few hundred students to over 4,000 students, and currently has over 60 fully online degree programs, according to Hartman.

Although the process for applying new degrees and events in the online learning community continues to roll, there are two degree programs that will be implemented soon. They include a bachelor's degree in professional studies from the Goodwin College of Professional Studies and a master's in arts administration, according to Nadine Ezzat, Drexel eLearning's marketing coordinator.

Hartman said: "We are going to continue to work with the faculty enhancing the quality to go from offering a super course to an outstanding course. There will be new degrees, new certificates and exciting new ways of delivering online content."

Although the award ceremony praised the online learning program itself, nine faculty members were also recognized for their exceptional teaching as online instructors: Denise Agosto, Jane Bokunewicz, Annemarie Martin-Boyan, Jean-Claude Bradley, Longjian Liu, Fariborz Partovi, Morton Rabinowitz, Stephanie Ross and David Urias.

Awards also went to Steve Hart for his outstanding contribution to online learning and to Nutter as an honorary Drexel University online student.
