MAD Dragon Records released The Redwalls' newest CD Oct. 23. On Nov. 14, the band will perform at the Trocadero.
The Redwalls are one of the more well known groups released by the label. Other CDs released this year have been: Andrew Lipke in February, Hoots & Hellmouth in April, and Unleashed in June. The Swimmers have recently been signed by MAD Dragon and are set to release a record in March 2008.
MAD Dragon Records is Drexel's music label, which was started in 2003 by Marcy Rauer Wagman. That year, the label released a complication CD of Drexel students called "Unleashed." Since then, the label has grown and now has some known artists. According to the MAD Dragon President Terry Tompkins, the label still wants to have more developing artists than established artists.
Over the past few years, technology has changed how the record label markets their artists. All of the artists that MAD Dragon produces can be found on iTunes and Rhapsody and they each have pages on MySpace. With this, Wagman claims that a global audience can be reached faster.
"Students play a huge role [in the label] and get the maximum benefit," Wagman said. They vote on what artists to sign, talk to executives and recording artists, advertise, market, merchandise, set up tours and more. What students learn in class is applied have hands on experience.
Each artist is assigned one or two production managers that handle all of the conversations between them and the record label. The challenges that the students have to face are: artists being skeptical that a student will be working with them, not getting respect from other people in the music industry and the generation gap between them, Joe McGinnis, a MAD Dragon representative said. Students have the opportunity go to concerts, record artists live and create music videos.
Both Tompkins and Wagman said a major challenge for the label was semester classes. In order to be a part of MAD Dragon, students have to take upper level classes and this affects how many students are able to work there. Graduation also is a challenge because valuable students leave, according to Wagman.
Wagman's goal is "to become the gold standard music program in the country."
She said that she gets emails from other students and schools around the country every day. MAD Dragon Records is holding a holiday party at World Café Live Dec. 4 at 7 pm upstairs. Performers include The Swimmers, Andrew Lipke and a Drexel band.
