Drexel's free music download program, MusicSelect, signed with another music provider, eMusic, in addition to Napster Nov. 6.

Drexel's Offices of Information Resources and Technology said they are confident that eMusic is a great replacement for iTunes, which recently withdrew its participation in MusicSelect. eMusic allows students to download 80 songs per year, instead of the 28 songs provided by iTunes.

eMusic is a large retailer of independent music that offers samples of more than three million songs from more than 13,000 independent labels. This is the first time that eMusic has marketed themselves as a music provider for any university.

"I asked some of my co-ops to look over the site and they said that eMusic had a lot of independent artists that other music providers didn't have," Associate Vice President of IRT, Ken Blackney, said.

A unique feature eMusic offers is its compatibility with the iPod for no additional cost. eMusic is also compatible with Windows, MacOS and Linux.

"Since eMusic provides its tracks in MP3 format without embedded digital rights management, songs downloaded from their site will work on almost any computer or portable player, including the Apple iPod," Blackney said.

However, these songs are still copyrighted, although they lack embedded digital rights management. It is still illegal to redistribute to other students the music that was legally obtained solely by the user.

Students can subscribe to eMusic via the MusicSelect website. If a student chooses eMusic over Napster, they are given one 20 song download coupon per quarter of service. Therefore, over four quarters, students can download up to 80 songs. Non-residential living students can purchase eMusic for $24 and are also eligible for up to 80 downloads. If a student joins in fall term, the price would be $18 for up to 60 downloads.

According to Blackney, students can redeem more than one coupon per quarter; however, they have 30 days to redeem the coupon before expiration. If students want more music, eMusic offers three premium plans that students can subscribe to privately. Prices for songs start at 27 cents each.

Blackney said 566 people had signed up for Napster while 33 had selected eMusic amoung dorm residents. Counting those not living in the dorms, 56 had signed up for Napster and none for eMusic as of Thursday night, Blackney said.

However, those that have already chosen Napster will not be eligible to choose eMusic this year.

"There is no way for us to change or reverse the codes," Blackney said.

"Drexel is still interested in offering even more choices in MusicSelect, and so we encourage students to email us with their suggestions for other legal online music providers," Blackney wrote in an e-mail.
