Police have issued an arrest warrant for Bernard Johnson, a homeless man in connection with the October robberies of three Drexel students, University officials said Nov. 10.

Johnson is wanted for allegedly robbing one student at knife point at the 33rd and Market Streets Trolley station Oct. 17 and two other students at the 3300 block of Brandywine Oct 18., also at knife point.

Johnson is a 47 year-old black male, six-feet tall and 170-pounds with facial hair Director of Public Safety Frederick Carbonara said.

Carbonara said Johnson was "positively identified" in from a photo and investigators were looking at Johnson for other crimes in Drexel's area.

There were eight robberies reported in the Drexel area in October and one reported in November according to Drexel Public Safety crime statistics. The eight crimes include those Johnson is wanted for.

Johnson is no stranger to crime according to investigators.

He has 11 prior arrests including burglary, contempt of court and narcotics possession according to Carbonara.

Johnson was most recently arrested in March 2007 on charges of burglary, theft and trespassing.

His first arrest came in 1993 on similar charges including receiving stolen property and criminal mischief according to court records.

Johnson was sentenced to probation and his court summary shows an active arrest warrant for "violation of probation" issued Oct. 11.

In addition to Johnson, investigators are also seeking information about a group juveniles wanted in connection with other recent robberies.

Carbonara said Drexel Public Safety had developed an informant in the juvenile robberies but investigators were still looking at those crimes.

Drexel Public Safety issued two campus wide safety alerts, first Oct. 19 then Oct. 23 in connection with the juveniles' and Johnson's crimes.

Patrols on and off campus were also increased and extra officers from the University City District and AlliedBarton were called in.

Carbonara also requested the Philadelphia Police Department's Special Investigations Unit assist in the investigation.

Students are urged to use the walking escort service and use emergency call boxes if necessary.
