Editorial: A Letter to Mayor Nutter

The Triangle congratulates the next mayor of Philadelphia, Michael Nutter.
Now that the ballots have been cast and the election won, Mayor Nutter is beginning to formulate the strategy he will use when he takes over City Hall next year.
We have one thing to tell the new mayor: Don't forget us!
Philadelphia wouldn't be Philadelphia without its college students - there are over 250,000 of us. In fact, some say that Philadelphia has the highest concentration of higher education institutions in the nation.
Ultimately, our college experience will play a large part in whether we stay here after graduation.
We've selected five issues that we hope Mayor Nutter and the incoming city administration will address in their term in office. Not only will these help college students, but we feel these issues benefit the entire city.
SEPTA
A good portion of Drexel students do not keep a car on campus. We depend on SEPTA to get around. Unfortunately, depending on SEPTA is like depending on the Eagles winning the Super Bowl this year. It's not going to happen.
We, and all Philadelphia residents, need a dependable mass transit system that gets us where we need to go. While mass transit systems on the West Coast are expanding, SEPTA keeps raising fares and cutting service.
We want a transit system that's safe and clean. Those of us from other cities put SEPTA at the bottom of the barrel of mass transit systems. It's disappointing, dysfunctional and largely disgusting.
Crime
Luckily, crime around Drexel's campus has not mirrored the trend in the rest of the city. It seems like every day, we hear about another murder or shooting.
During the Oct. 30 Democratic Presidential Debate, a police officer was shot just a few blocks from our campus while the school and this city were in the national spotlight.
Days latter another Philadelphia Police officer died from gunshot wounds in a separate incident. The killing must end.

To Mayor Nutter:
Today at the polls voters were asked to decide whether a measure in excess of $6 million was justified to upkeep and upgrade transit systems, parks and other public works; if borrowed. (Continued…)
