Already having clinched third place in the Colonial Athletic Association, the Drexel field hockey team fell to Towson, 4-2, in the regular season finale for both teams.
The loss snapped the Dragons' four-game winning streak and gave the team a final regular season record of 11-8, including 5-3 in the conference. With the win, the Tigers improved to 8-10 for the season and 3-5 in the CAA.
The first half belonged to Towson as they dominated the Dragons. The Tigers didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard as senior forward Kajee Murangi scored at the 2:53 mark after taking a pass from teammate Christina Boarman, giving Towson the early 1-0 lead. It was Murangi's 11th goal of the season.
A little more than 15 minutes after getting the first tally of the contest, Towson added another one as Boarman converted a penalty stroke at 18:16 for her team-leading 13th goal of the year, extending the lead to 2-0. The Tigers then jumped all over the Dragons with less than three minutes remaining in the half.
With 2:42 to go in the first half, freshman midfielder Tiffany Moyer scored her third goal of the season to give Towson a three-goal advantage. With the assist on Moyer's goal, Boarman now has a CAA-leading 36 points for the season. Murangi scored again just over a minute later, her second of the contest, giving the Tigers the 4-0 lead going into halftime. Coming into the game, Drexel had allowed just eight goals in the last eight games.
The Drexel offense finally began as senior midfielder Sarah Gostomski scored on a penalty corner less than three minutes into the second half. It was Gostomski's fourth goal of the season. Fellow senior Emily Horvat and sophomore Carolina Gibernau got the assists on the goal.
The Dragons did not score again until there was less than eight minutes left in the game. Forward Jennifer Bolger scored her fifth goal of the season on a penalty corner, with an assist from Gostomski, cutting the Towson lead to 4-2. However, the scoring would end there as the Tigers hung on for the win, securing a postseason berth in the process.
Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew made nine saves in the game. She has played every single second this season for the Dragons. McAndrew's 1.49 goals-against-average ranks second among all CAA goalies, behind only Kelsey Cutchins of James Madison.
Senior goalkeeper Michelle Cheek posted a career-best 10 saves for Towson. The Tigers outshot Drexel, 16-13, but the Dragons had more penalty corners, 10-8.
The Dragons will play sixth-seeded Hofstra in the opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Nov. 1 at 8:30 p.m. The Pride finished with a regular season record of 7-10 (3-5 CAA). The quarterfinal match, which will be played at the United States Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va., will follow the earlier game between the fourth-seeded Northeastern Huskies (8-11, 4-4 CAA) against No. 5 Towson.
