Drexel men's soccer remained scorching hot as it won its seventh straight game defeating UNC Wilmington, 1-0, in double overtime in the Oct. 21 conference game.
It was the team's third straight shutout, all by the same margin of victory.
With the shutout victory, Drexel improved its record to 9-2-2 (6-0 CAA), while the Seahawks dropped to a conference-worst 2-10-1 (1-5 CAA). Coupled with Old Dominion's loss to Towson, the Dragons are now the only school left in the Colonial Athletic Association that remains undefeated in conference games. The win also guaranteed the team a winning regular season record for the first time since 2002, when Drexel went 10-8-3 in their first season in the CAA.
After remaining a scoreless tie throughout regulation time and the first overtime session, the Dragons finally were able find the back of the net halfway through the second 10-minute extra period. Sophomore Fabio Assumpcao, off of a quick restart after a UNC Wilmington foul, quickly passed to teammate Anthony Bafile, who then fed Leland Raum on a cross for the tap-in goal at 104:59. It was Raum's second goal of the season. His only other goal this year came in the season opener against Lehigh.
The assist by Bafile extended his point scoring streak to six consecutive games. He also scored the Dragons' only goal in their 1-0 win against Georgia State two days earlier.
Goalkeeper Cory Robertson made five saves in earning his fifth shutout of the season. His shutout streak has now reached 288 minutes, 51 seconds since allowing a late goal against Towson Oct. 12. The junior lowered his goals-against-average to 0.35, which is still tops in the conference. Robertson's GAA also ranks second among all Division-I goalies who have played at least 50 percent of their team's minutes.
The Seahawks outshot Drexel for the game, 8-7, though all eight of UNC Wilmington's shots came in regulation time. The Dragons had just four in the first 90 minutes, but they had all of the scoring opportunities in the overtime periods. UNC Wilmington also had the edge in corner kicks, 2-0, as the Dragons were held without one for the first time this season.
Ranked No. 5 in the South Atlantic Region last week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Drexel moves up one spot to No. 4 with its two conference victories over the weekend. Only Virginia Tech, Boston College and the University of Virginia are ranked higher than the Dragons.
The Dragons will be back at Vidas Field when they host Hofstra (3-8-2, 2-4 CAA) Oct. 26. They will then travel to Boston, Mass to play Northeastern (5-8, 3-3 CAA) in an Oct. 28 conference game before closing out the regular season with three straight home games.
