While you won't see the likes of powerhouses Syracuse and Villanova on the 2007-2008 schedule, Drexel men's basketball will play some top quality competition.
"We'll always play a challenging schedule," said Head Coach Bruiser Flint. "Our schedule has always helped us get into the postseason."
The Dragons will face the Virginia Cavaliers of the ACC Nov. 20 as part of the Philly Classic in Charlottesville highlighting their non-conference schedule.
The Cavaliers, who were bounced in the second round of the NCAA tournament, are coming off a 21-10 season including an 11-5 record in conference play.
As part of the inaugural classic, Drexel will host Navy Nov. 11, while playing Robert Morris Nov. 23 and a to be determined team at the Palestra Nov. 24.
Flint believes that the Philly Classic will give fans the opportunity to see some quality programs in the city.
"You'll see some good basketball," he said. "We've got some good teams (Seton Hall and Virginia) coming into the Palestra. You'll be able to see some good basketball throughout the day."
The Dragons kick off their season against their rivals, the Pennsylvania Quakers at the Palestra Nov. 9. Drexel has not beaten the Quakers since the 2002-2003.
Drexel will also play at the historic venue against City Six rivals Temple Dec. 15 and St. Joseph's Dec. 31. The Dragons defeated both their last season Philly rivals en route to a 3-1 record against teams of the Former "Big Five."
They will host top notch mid-majors Creighton (Dec. 1), Bucknell (Dec. 22) and Rider (Dec. 27).
"Those teams, if you read those magazines, are always going to be at the top of their league," Flint said. "Rider, Bucknell (and) Creighton - those teams are always going to be at the top two or three (of their leagues) every year."
Drexel will begin conference play when they travel to Fairfax, Virginia to take on George Mason Nov. 29. They will host the Patriots Feb. 7 wrapping up their home and home series.
Drexel will face Delaware, Hofstra, William & Mary, Northeastern and Towson twice this season.
The Dragons will face possibly their two most critical conference games on the road at Virginia Commonwealth Jan. 26 and Old Dominion Feb. 14.
VCU and ODU compiled a record of 4-0 against the Dragons last year and both teams are expected to compete for the CAA conference championship after making the NCAA tournament last season.
Drexel will also be hosting a Bracket Busters game on Feb. 23.
The Dragons will be on television 16 times this season, including three times on ESPNU. They will also make one appearance on Comcast SportsNet. The rest of their games will air on CN8.
Drexel finished 23-9 last season, which led to a birth in the National Invitational Tournament. The Dragons have made the postseason in four of their last five seasons and return two starters from last year's squad.
