Shooting reported blocks from debate

As countless law enforcement officials stood watch over the candidates at the Drexel University debate, reports are emerging of a police officer shot at 22nd and Chestnut streets.

Witnesses on the scene said they saw a man running from police before jumping in the Schuylkill River between Market and Walnut streets.

Police sources said an officer was shot and taken to Jefferson Hospital. Philadelphia Police could not confirm that report at the time of this writing.

"I saw a guy in the water" said Sarah Neil, who was walking along the river at the time. Neil said the events unfolded around 10:25 p.m.

One police officer jumped in the water after the suspect but was quickly pulled out by fellow officers Neil said.

NBC10 is reporting that two shootings occurred: one at 1500 Samsom Street and one at 22nd and Chestnut streets. Media reports indicate a police officer was shot.

Pennsylvania State Police assigned to debate security rushed to the scene along with members of other debate security teams.
