The new Dining Services Committee at Drexel plans to come together with students this year to improve the quality and variety of food and retail services across campus.
Run by Sodexho, the committee is a University-wide imitation of Sodexho's own student board of directors. The Drexel version involves three resident students, three commuters, three staff members, and three faculty members. The committee will meet once a month over lunch or dinner and will evaluate the quality of the food, the variety offered and the overall quality of the dining experience.
Senior Associate Vice President of Business Services Rita LaRue Gollotti is overseeing the selections of staff and faculty members for the committee. LaRue Gollotti said that the focus of the group is to unearth and remedy the complaints that diners have with food on campus to better serve the campus community.
"It's about dining and retail across campus. I want to hear complaints and I want to make them better," LaRue Gollotti said.
The committee will also work on planning upcoming food locations across campus, such as the library cafe in Hagerty Library and the Cafe on Main located in the Main Building, both currently under construction.
"I want to think more big picture," LaRue Gollotti said.
Other areas the committee plans to address are the meal plans and food options available to summer term students, according to LaRue Gollotti.
"I want to make sure it's crafted to best serve that population," she said.
Undergraduate Student Government Association Student Life Representative Stacey Rose is heading the committee of students and is currently recruiting members for the board. Rose said that the idea for the committee came from Jim Tucker, senior vice president of Student Life and Administrative Services.
"In the spring, Jim Tucker told us about his idea to have a dining services committee that was more internal. We've had food committees through Sodexho, but this is going to be run through Jim Tucker's office. It's more focused than Sodexho, and it's also incorporating ideas about bringing vendors in from outside locations," Rose said.
