After being suspended over the summer and reorganizing their chapter, Delta Sigma Phi returned to campus this fall with new rules, a new executive board and a renovated house, according to Tim Tomalavage, the public relations chair of the fraternity.
The fraternity underwent major changes this summer after fourteen brothers who were part of the Alumni Corporation Board (ACB) took disciplinary action against the chapter according to the Office of the Dean of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Tomalavage.
According to Kathleen Peoples, interim director for Fraternity and Sorority Life, the alumni decided to temporarily suspend the chapter's operations and reorganize because the undergraduate members were not meeting the educational, moral and social standards set forth by alumni members and the National Fraternity Headquarters.
As reported in the June 26 issue of The Triangle, there were also allegations of x-rated pictures of female Drexel students being posted on the fraternity's internal web site.
Members moved out and the house was closed for one month. Seven members moved back into the house July 15, but the chapter did not resume operations until the start of fall term according to Tomalavage.
At least ten brothers were expelled, according to Tomalavage. The ACB sent notice of expulsions letters to certain men within the organization. One night, each brother who received a notice of expulsion appeared before the ACB in the academic room of the Delta Sig house to determine his status.
Tomalavage said that men were expelled for a variety of reasons including grades, debt to the organization, and because their conduct was not in line with the fraternity.
The organization had 30 members spring term, and is currently down to 18 active members. Two of the men are appealing their expulsion according to Tomalavage.
Some brothers were evaluated and given a second chance, but their behavior will be closely monitored. Some of the brothers whose actions were called into question were seniors, and they were put on suspension until graduation. They do not participate in any events, but upon graduating will be converted to alumni status.
