The plan includes a grid of walkable streets, much like the neighborhoods to the west of Interstate 95, that extend right to the river's edge. There are also parks with green space, wide sidewalks, a public pathway along the water, and submerged parts of I-95 and better public transit.
Suspect in Bar Slayings Confesses
The suspect apprehended a suspect in the killing of four men in Abay's Wheeler Bar where Mayor John Street threatened to close down the bar if no witnesses came forward in the July 22 quadruple homicide. Vonzell Roundtree was arrested and confessed to the murders yesterday.
According to his confession in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Roundtree only wanted to help his uncle Jamar Thompson in a fight, but wound up killing him and three others. Roundtree saw men punching and "swarming" around Thompson in the Southwest Philadelphia bar and so he pulled out his 9mm Beretta and fired wildly into the crowd. The men were all there to watch the Bernard Hopkins versus Winky Wright boxing match on television, and earlier reports believed the argument may have sparked over a bet on the fight.
Numerous Hazards in Fire Kills Two
A woman and her 13-year-old niece were killed in an electrical fire this week in a rowhouse in South Philadelphia. According to fire officials reporting in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the house had numerous fire hazards, including overloaded electrical cords and no working smoke alarms. Twice on Oct. 13, firefighters had put out blazes outside the home and offered to inspect the home and put in smoke alarms for free, but the owners refused.
The fire started in a second-floor bedroom where an air conditioner blowing on high had been plugged into a power strip. The owner of the house escaped and said firefighters were slow to get water on the flames. According to her, six of their 10 dogs inside died. They said that their fire alarms were disabled while they were painting.
