Drexel's Main Auditorium has been transformed into a TV studio.
Drexel's Main Auditorium has been transformed into a TV studio.

There has been a buzz around campus lately - and it's not because of sports or an important administrative decision. It's because the Democrats are coming. Drexel is in the process of transforming into a political oasis.

It certainly is a great honor for the University to be hosting the Oct. 30 debate. If all goes well, this is a chance for the University to make a positive impression on the rest of the country.

Of course, we are all going to have to make sacrifices. Streets and buildings are going to be closed, disrupting the academic process. However, we think that most members of the campus community will agree that it is for a good reason.

We've also been hearing that students at other local colleges are jealous of Drexel. How often does that happen? Not often. Articles have appeared in student newspapers at St. Joseph's University and Temple University expressing student disappointment that their respective school was not selected to host this debate.

Currently, the level of apathy among students for national issues, elections and political candidates is saddening. It's our future and while every politician does not necessarily keep his or her promises, we still need to care.

So, while you're preparing to watch this debate at Drexel, take some time to research the presidential candidates. See who you want to vote for. See whose ideas fit in with your visions and values. If you don't know what those are, this is your chance to find out.

While NBC will be covering the national perspective of this debate, we at The Triangle feel that it is our duty to cover the concerns, thoughts and experiences of the Drexel community.

Because we only publish print issues each Friday, we will be using our web site, www.thetriangle.org, to provide the student perspective throughout the debate. We will be covering the various events around campus on debate day.

If you are part of a student group that will be holding a special event for the debate, we want to know about it. Contact our news department by e-mailing news@thetriangle.org so that we can report about it in our special web-only issue that will be published Oct. 31.

If you are not currently subscribed to our electronic issues, you can do so by visiting our web site.

Finally, it's obvious that most students will be unable to directly question the candidates. Many Drexel students will be taking a backseat to the national importance of this event because they will be unable to attend. However, we want to take your issues directly to the people vying to hold the office of President of the United States. So, send us your questions for the candidates to news@thetriangle.org and we'll do our best to ensure they are answered.

After originally making arrangements to include all the Democratic candidates, MSNBC (owned by General Electric) reversed itself last Friday and created questionable criteria apparently devised specifically to exclude the most outspoken critic of the military industrial complex. (Continued…)
