Indians looking to end curse dating back to '64

Issue date: 10/19/07 Section: Sports
Just two years earlier, the Tribe brought the best record in the league to the World Series only to lose in six games to the Atlanta Braves.

That same year in 1995, beloved Browns Owner Art Modell decided to move the franchise to Baltimore before the start of the 1996 season. After a public outcry, the Browns were deactivated from 1996-1999 while their new stadium was being built and Modell got his wish moving the current team to Baltimore.

Since the 1999 re-expansion, the Browns are 43-91 as of Week 6 of this season, only making the playoffs once, while the Ravens captured the Super Bowl in 2000 and have been a model of consistency in the NFL.

And that's just the 90s.

Back in the 80s, the Cavaliers made some guy named Jordan a hero when he hit a buzzer beater to win their first-round matchup and John Elway led the Broncos on "The Drive" preventing the Browns from reaching the Super Bowl. In the 1950s some guy named Mays made "The Catch."

See the themes? A city known for not being able to seal the deal, bringing out the star in the opposition's superstar, and almost failing to keep its most storied franchise.

Sure, they keep their heads held high, just like they do in the city of Brotherly Love, however, deep down there's that feeling that even the best teams are going to let the city down - and rightfully so. History always seems to repeat itself.

But wait. Maybe the Indians are the one to break the curse. They've got a great 1-2 punch in their rotation in C.C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona. They also feature a multi-talented offense that features Grady Sizemore, Victor Martinez and Travis Hafner among others. They can flat out rake and they can pitch too.

Regardless, this should set up to be a great ending to a rather shocking season.

Wouldn't it be great if the Indians shocked Cleveland and won it all?

You bet.
