For Drexel, it was its third victory in the last four games as it improved to 8-7 (3-2 CAA) for the season. The Quakers, who entered the game winners of three straight and six out of seven, fell to 6-6 on the season.
Penn jumped out to the early 1-0 lead when junior midfielder Christina Ferrier took a pass from teammate Jamie Calahan and deposited it into the back of the cage just 2:28 into the game.
Mastropaolo tied the game when she got the Dragons on the board with her first of two goals at 24:30 of the first half. Teammate Amanda Kicera scooped up the loose ball in front of the net and dished it to an open Mastropaolo in the circle, who buried it past goalie Alanna Butera. The assist gave Kicera a team-leading six for the season.
It barely took a minute into the second half for the Dragons to grab their first lead of the game. On a penalty corner, senior midfielder Sarah Gostomski slid the ball to Jennifer Bolger, who fired the shot by Butera for the 2-1 lead. It was Bolger's fourth goal of the year.
The one-goal lead quickly became a two-goal advantage less than a minute and a half later when Mastropaolo scored her second goal of the game. With Butera unable to control a rebound out in front, Mastropaolo easily tipped the ball in for her fourth goal of the season, tying her with teammatesBolger and Carolina Gibernau for the team lead.
With 35 seconds remaining, Kathryn Burke scored to get Penn to within a goal of the Dragons. Any chance of a last-second comeback ended, however, when the Quakers were unable to come up with any more scoring opportunities after that. Penn did manage to outshoot the Dragons for the game, 15-9, including eight shots in the second half.
Goalie Colleen McAndrew stopped seven shots, giving her 80 saves for the season, which is good for second among CAA goalies. Her 1.49 goals-against-average also ranks her No. 2 in the CAA, behind only Kelsey Cutchins of James Madison.
Mastropaolo's effort against Penn earned her Colonial Athletic Association Co-Rookie of the Week honors for field hockey. She shares the honor with James Madison's Dolores de Rooij, who scored three goals for the Dukes in their two games.
Drexel will host Northeastern (6-9, 2-2 CAA) Oct. 19 at Buckley Field in the final home game of the regular season. The Dragons' only seniors on the 2007 roster, Gostomski, Horvat, and Casey Mouser will all be honored in pre-game senior day festivities.
