Students interested in the Oct. 30 Democratic Debate may have a new forum to share their thoughts when Open-Vote.com, a student polling forum, launches on Oct. 24 at Drexel University.
The web site is an independent organization, and was created by two graduate students from Dartmouth University, Jason Freedman and Colin Van Ostern. Originally, Freedman and Van Ostern created it in conjunction with debates held at Dartmouth University. Open-Vote.com allows student to instantly create polls and see the results from other students.
ìWe are fundamentally interested in creating a platform where student voices can be heard, where they can ask questions and find out what their campus thinks,î Freedman said.
When the site launches at the University, students will be able to log on and vote or post comments on any topic. Although the information posted, including poll results and comments, will be available to all viewers, only students will be able to post comments and vote. Students can choose to list their names or remain anonymous.
Freedman said the site will help college students learn what the rest of the campus is thinking.
ìThis is how you find out what the campus thinks on any issue. It can help the rest of the world, even, including administration, media, prospective students, classmates, etcÖî he said.
Freedman said he is mainly interested in involving student organizations.
ìWe like to partner with student groups to help promote it, editorialize it and everything,î Freedman said. ìWe are very closely connected with campaigns, they all have people assigned to Drexel Open-Vote, and the campaigns have an interest in their candidate winning, so theyíll be getting their followers to vote. Itís a very powerful tool for them to get their voices heard, and itís the central place for student opinion about campus issues.î
Another positive aspect of the web site is that it allows students to be involved on campus without inconveniencing them, according to Freedman.
