iTunes pulls out

MusicSelect, Drexel's music download program, has returned after a month of being inoperative, according to Ken Blackney associate vice president of IRT.

The problem was related to Apple's decision to withdraw from selling bulk music codes to the program, as well as a change in the University's credit card processing system.

"Drexel's IRT department was forced to remove all of the iTunes codes for MusicSelect, and the University changed their credit card processing, which caused the delay in MusicSelect's availability," Blackney said.

Napster is currently the only music provider for MusicSelect.

As of Oct. 15, the makers of Napster 4.0 have expanded their software to include support for MacOS and Linux, as well as Windows operating systems. However, Napster is still not compatible with iPods.

Since its debut in 2005, MusicSelect has provided students in residential halls a free alternative for legally downloading music, as the cost is included in their Resnet fees. The money came available after the University decided to disconnect the telephone jacks from inside the resident halls and put it towards MusicSelect. For other students, including those in Greek housing and University Crossings, MusicSelect is available for $24 per year.

"MusicSelect is a safe and legal way of getting out music to students in a way that the University endorses," Blackney said.

Last year, according to Blackney, 1,480 students living in Residential Halls subscribed to MusicSelect with 60 percent choosing Napster and 40 percent choosing iTunes. Of the non-residential living students, 139 subscribed with 88 percent choosing Napster and 12 percent choosing iTunes.

To increase the number of subscriptions to MusicSelect, the University will send an e-mail notifying all students once the site is up and running. Additionally, the University plans on advertising the program in resident halls.

In order to give students the opportunity to choose their provider, Drexel's IRT department is looking for students to suggest another music provider to add to MusicSelect.
