Domenic Ceccanecchio, a former University of Pennsylvania security official, was hired as the new senior associate vice president of public safety and will begin working in his role Oct. 29, according to an Oct. 16 statement from the University.

James Tucker, senior vice president of Student Life, called Ceccanecchio an "innovative leader in public safety" in the statement, and stressed his experience working in University City and the surrounding communities.

"In his new position he will redefine how the Department of Public Safety collaborates with local law enforcement to better security measures on campus and in the neighboring communities," a Division of Student Life and Administrative Services press release stated.

The decision to hire Ceccanecchio was based on his background as both a Philadelphia Police officer and his most recent position in UPenn's Division of Public Safety as the director of Security and Technical Services, according to the release.

Ceccanecchio's immediate priorities will be to "evaluate the visible campus patrols and making sure the security officers are engaging with the campus community.î he said.

Ceccanecchio will also review the University Public Safety Department's powers of arrest.

Stacey Rose, Undergraduate Student Government Association student life assembly representative praised Ceccanecchio's experience.

"Domenic brings an amazing amount of experience with him; his long tenure with the Philadelphia Police coupled with his time at the University of Pennsylvania will hopefully bring a positive influence to Drexel. He is already familiar with University City, the crime patterns, the officials, the schools - it should only benefit us if everything is implemented correctly," Rose said.

In his role at UPenn, Ceccanecchio was responsible for the management of the AlliedBarton contracted security officers, the closed circuit television network as well as UPenn's security access control technology.
