Social change is possible in small steps

Matt Schirano

Issue date: 10/19/07 Section: Ed-Op
The kings, czars, and dictators of the past did not have the means of control that these people have at their disposal. Today's controllers exercise an even more perverse sense of control over their slaves because they have to keep civil society from accessing the information at their fingertips.

In the past this meant simply keeping the masses from being able to read and write, the key to liberating the mind. Today, controllers must keep their citizens, who might be literate, from even realizing the information they have access to. Instead of using our amazing technology to proliferate knowledge and goodwill across the world, controllers use it to swamp us with mindless garbage and materialism that directs our attention away from real problems.

As technology has amplified the voice of the common person, a new crime against humanity has been created. Murder, rape, and robbery have a new friend in apathy. Maybe you aren't killing someone's son, or stealing the livelihood of a family, but you're preventing your fellow man from developing his intelligence in the same way you can yours.

It doesn't take each of us taking massive steps like Dr. Martin Luther King, but it requires us taking the massive steps of his followers.

Find the voice that is calling out for the gathering of intelligent minds. Find that person screaming out, "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!" Social change comes in slow steps, but it won't go anywhere if you're not trying to push it along.
