Another goal by midfielder Carlos Ruthner in consecutive games and superb defense helped the Drexel men's soccer team continue their recent hot streak as the Dragons shut out Virginia Commonwealth, 1-0.
Drexel improved its record to 5-2-2 overall, including 2-0 in conference play, while the Rams dropped to 5-2-2 (1-1 CAA) for the season. The conference game was played on Oct. 7 in Richmond, Va., and the win was the third in a row for the Dragons.
In the 48th minute, Ruthner, a transfer junior from Burlington County College, took a pass from teammate Anthony Bafile in the box and buried it past goalie Andrew Dykstra, giving Drexel the 1-0 advantage. It was Ruthner's second goal of the season, and the assist gave Bafile two for the year, adding to his team-leading eight points overall.
Virginia Commonwealth's best scoring opportunity came in the 28th minute when sophomore midfielder/forward Owusu Sekyere dribbled past the Dragon defenders and sent a pass across to teammate Sven Meusch, who fired a shot on goal and, if not for goalie Cory Robertson's diving stop, would have given the Rams the one-goal advantage.
For the game, Virginia Commonwealth more than doubled up the Dragons in shots, 20-9, but were only able to get two of those on goal. The Rams also had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-1. Of the 20 shots, 13 came in the second half as VCU desperately tried to even the score.
Robertson made two saves in recording his second shutout of the season, and the fourth for Drexel this year. He also lowered his CAA-leading goals-against-average to 0.44, edging Virginia Commonwealth's Dykstra by 0.01. Robertson's .875 save percentage is also tops among CAA goalies.
Ruthner, who also scored for Drexel against James Madison in the previous game, was chosen as the CAA Co-Player of the Week in men's soccer for his fine efforts in the two games over the weekend. Also, College Soccer News named him to its National Team of the Week. He shares the award with midfielder Pat Healey, of Towson. Healey recorded one goal and four assists in a pair of games for the Tigers.
The Dragons' next game will be Oct. 12 at Vidas Field against Towson. The Tigers are 5-3-1 for the season, and like Drexel, they are also 2-0 in conference play. The Dragons will be going for their third conference win of the season, which will be one more they had all of last season.
