Drexel's Election Task Force met Oct. 11 to discuss plans to promote student involvement in the upcoming elections via a "Drexel Votes 2008" election web site.
Through the new election project, members of the task force are hoping to further encourage student participation by sponsoring voter registration drives and events during the time of the Democratic Presidential Debate, which is scheduled for Oct. 30.
These events include a pre-debate party at the DAC followed by a broadcast of the debate at the DAC. Chris Matthews will also be in the Quad on the day of the debate to interview and discuss issues with students.
"We're at a turning point in our political life and there are issues facing all of us, but they concern the student generation even more than my generation," said Jane Bryan, Director of Libraries. The "Drexel Votes 2008" project website, currently under construction, will become a resource for students, both Drexel students and non-Drexel students, throughout the next 13 months on the road to Election Day.
The web site will be utilized to inform students about the importance of voting and how to register to vote. It will also provide information about the candidates and their positions on issues so that students can decide who to vote for.
Upcoming events and current news stories will also be accessible on the homepage of the website.
Committee members encouraged putting polls and surveys on the web site in order to see what the students think of the election candidates before and after the debate.
Members are not waiting for next year to commence registration drives and will host a drive as early as the day of the Democratic debate.
Committee members for Drexel Votes 2008 include College of Arts and Sciences Dean Donna Murasko, Pennoni Honors College Dean Mark Greenberg, USGA President Jeff Gardosh, history and political science professors Ricardson Dilworth and Scott Knowles, and Adrei Muntean of the Office of Government and Community Relations, among others.
The diversity of the committee, similar to the diversity of the Drexel students, provides for a broadened prospective on how to get students registered to vote and politically active in the upcoming months.
This campus-wide project is sponsored by the Hagerty Library with partnership between IRT, the Office of University Relations and a variety of department representatives from Drexel.
