Questlove of The Roots will be performing at Midnight Madness Oct. 18 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center instead of Saigon and Kid Capri, the performers who were originally scheduled to appear.

The change has made the event free for students, which was a big factor, according to Rob Falcone, president of the DAC Pack, in the success of this event. He said that many students expressed an interest in free events on campus and they responded to what students want. "After the success of Midnight Madness last year, we were looking for a way to add more excitement to this season's events Falcone said.

"With the addition of Questlove, we were able to add a high quality performer in addition to more student involvement and prizes, while still keeping the event free of charge."

Falcone said that the DAC Pack, along with Drexel Professor Sean Joyce, began thinking of how they would open the basketball season over the summer. Their goal was to really step it up and stir excitement and school spirit within the student body.

They originally were talking with Kid Capri and Saigon, but realized they only had one month to plan the event. According to Falcone, the time constraint that was placed upon planning the event led to the change in performers. Within one week of contacting Questlove's management, he was signed to participate in Campus Kickoff/Midnight Madness. He also emphasized that students expressed enthusiasm for a free event, and so that was taken into consideration when planning the rally.

Falcone also said that he has received a lot of positive feedback about Questlove appearing. He said that many students went to The Roots concert a few weeks ago and are looking forward to one of the members DJing at Drexel. There are even Drexel Facebook fan groups dedicated to Questlove.

"I think some of the consensus from the students is that they are looking at the positive changes to the event, as opposed to the negatives," said Stacey Rose, Student Life Assembly Chair for USGA. "It's free now, and Questlove, who is from a local Philly group will be spinning instead. It's a win-win situation regardless."

Due to contractual reasons, the DAC Pack could not comment on rumors that the entertainment change was the result of the original performers backing out at the last minute or financial reasons.

Questlove will be DJing for the entire event, including during the player

introductions, dunk contest, three point competition and contests for prizes. Prizes will include a Nintendo Wii, tickets to the Drexel vs. Penn Basketball game and a $10,000 scholarship. The event begins at 9:30 p.m.
